Snowboarding - Increasingly Fashionable

At the present moment there are lots of genuinely trendy snowboarding games out there for nearly every computing machine console that you can think of, there are also online games and PC games for you to try. It really is a lot of fun for those of us who want to sample the world of snow boarding through a game. A lot people criticise computer games and the way that they stop children going out and doing real sport and activities, and although this is the case with a lot of children I have found that many of the people that I know that have started snow boarding only done so because they firstly tried it on a computer.

Yes folks, I am talking about people that originally played a game on a electronic computer then conceived that it was so much fun that they would give it a go in actual life. This may sound crazy to a lot of you, but to me it sounds perfectly reasonable. The only problem is that games are made in a way so that they are more exciting, however pulling off some of the stunts that appear in the games is nearly impossible in real life, even for the most experienced snowboarders that I know and have heard of. What people have to do is keep a realistic idea of what they want to do and they are far more likely to attain their goals. This is what I thought, and it is one of the many reasons that I caution people about this before they get started. People are so used to doing things with little practise on computers, so they have to remember that doing things in real life can take far more practise and resolve.

The fact that computing devices games are getting individuals to the slopes is great, but I am sure that it is not only computer games that are causing this on their own. Snow Boarding has become a brand, it is associated with a certain lifestyle and that is why those who want to be cool, hip and freestyle are hitting the slopes. The truth is that the sport is now classed under the “extreme” category placing it on a pedestal next to motor cross, BMX and skate boarding. The rise of popularity in snowboarding also comes down to its similarity with other sports. Those who previously skate boarded and still do will find themselves naturally apt to handle a snow board and the same applies to skate boarding. Those who are used to skate boarding will find the thought of snowboarding appealing, even surfing could be classed in the same manner.

The rise of snowboarding is also down to the personalities, sportsmanship and ability of the topmost athletes that compete in the sport. The kind of professionalism and commitment that you see within the sport is impressive considering the age of the sport, and the age of the athletes that compete within it. I am aware that international DJs, singers and sportsman all show up at the major events and this is also something that has raised the profile of the sport.

As more and more people enter into the sport and try it each week, it is important that we try our best to support these people and ensure that a high retention rate happens. The fact is that snowboarding requires a level of commitment that other sports do not require in as much abundance from the outset. A boarder is expected to make an investment in equipment, memberships and a board from an early stage, and it is important that this is met. We should all encourage boarders to start, and in doing so we will raise the profile of our sport and we will raise the respect for what we do. Whether through computer games, brands and perceptions or whatever it doesn’t matter. It is snowboarding that matters.

Gear-Up: A Guide to Basic Snowboard Gear

Posted under Snowboarding by richard on September 30, 2008 3:41 pm

For some individuals snowboarding has replaced skiing as the winter sport of choice for some. Having evolved from techniques used in surfing and skateboarding, it has increased in popularity over the years.

A great workout, it tones the entire body while providing a cardiovascular workout that provides for strengthened heart muscles and improvement of oxygen delivery. It can be a great sport for those who want a physically demanding activity.

Shopping for a Snowboard

There is a lot involved in getting into snowboarding, not the least of which is snowboarding equipment. The list of this equipment can be quite long depending on the preparedness and seriousness of the snowboarder.

A snowboard is an absolute necessity for any snowboarder. A snowboard resembles a small surfboard, equipped with bindings. To find a snowboard that is right for you, first you must determine your own needs such as what kind of snowboarding you plans to do. There are several types including freestyle, freeride, and race. Each type of snowboarding requires a different type of board. There are many different sizes, brands and models – so be sure to shop around.

Additional items to consider when shopping for a snowboard include the length and width of the boards, tail and tip length and width, maximum stance, sidecut, ability to maneuver at high speeds, weight and sliders, or binding holes. There are also women’s specific boards available that are narrower for smaller feet and are more able to accommodate a lighter rider.

Other types of snowboard equipment include, of course, the snowboard itself. Additional gear is boots, bindings, winter wear such as jackets, gloves and hats, helmets etc.

Preparations Against Mother Nature

As with skiing, snowboard equipment must encompass not only the requirements of the sport, but also protect against the weather conditions that are necessary for snowboarding. Winter equipment such as warm clothing, earmuffs, hand/foot warmers, and boot dryer are must haves when it comes to snowboard gear. Sunscreen, sunglasses, maps, and a basic hydration system are required snowboard gear as they are for all physically laborious outdoor activities.

Winter Gear

Be sure you are prepared for the cold temperatures before you head out to the slopes. As with skiing, the cold is a given. A solid winter coat, gloves, earmuffs, and hat are must have snowboarding gear. You need to consider not only temperature, but also the sun. Carry chapstick, sunscreen, and sunglasses to avoid excess sun exposure and damage from the snow glare.

Safety First

Regardless of where you decide to snowboard, you need to consider other safety factors. A helmet and pads can help prevent serious bodily injury. A basic first aid kit is not a bad idea either. And what if you were to get lost? Even if you are familiar with the area in which you are snowboarding, it is not unwise to have a travel guide or map among your snowboard gear. A signaling device can also be useful in case you are lost or trapped due to an avalanche.

Before You Hit the Slopes

Individual snowboarders can best determine their own needs, and what should be among their snowboard gear. A seasoned snowboarder will have a better knowledge of brands and types of boards as well as the overall dangers. The best way to find out what is right for you is to shop around and ask questions. And be prepared! Nature is your playing field with this sport so you must always prepare for the unexpected.

Is Snowboarding That Thrilling?

Posted under Snowboarding by richard on September 15, 2008 9:29 am

Snowboarding is a thrilling twist that incorporates some of the basic concepts of skiing. However, it is much more daring and many people find it offers them the challenges that they love while out in the snow. To keep a snowboard on the feet, there are straps on the board. Most snowboards look similar to a surfboard but shorter. There are no poles used for snowboarding and so you have to use your body to control it.

Even though the concepts behind snowboarding have been around since the 1970’s, the popularity of it exploded around 1998. It became very popular with the younger crowds that often engaged in skateboarding activities. This is even now on of the most anticipated events that takes place in the Winter Olympic
Games. The internet is also responsible for the popularity of snowboarding as there are numerous sites offering videos of the activities that really capture the attention of viewers.

Due to the popularity of snowboarding today, many ski resorts now rent snowboarding equipment and offer lessons for free on their slopes. They would prefer for people to learn the basics of snowboarding from a qualified individual than risk getting injured attempting the moves on their own. The fact that so many other people make snowboarding look easy can be misleading.

Some people believe you have to know how to ski before you can learn how to snowboard. This continues to be an issue of hot debate and it appears that it simple comes down to what you learned first. There are plenty of snowboarders out there that don’t know how to ski. It is similar to the issue of learning to drive on a stick shift – those that did think it was easy while those that didn’t can’t imagine having one more thing to try to do while learning how to drive.

Many ski resorts often hold snowboarding competitions as well for great prizes including cash and free lodging at their ski resort. The freedom that people get with snowboarding makes it very enjoyable. The various flips and turns that people perform while skateboarding can be incorporated into a snowboarding routine. It is fascinating to see snowboarder’s compete as they attempt the most difficult moves in order to get the best ranking from the judges.

There are also plenty of big name sponsors that have come on board for these snowboarding competitions. Some of them are only for professionals while many of them are reserved for amateurs. The Ticket to Ride is a snowboarding competition that takes place in various locations in order to continually promote this winter sport.

The advances that have taken place in the overall design of the snowboards and the number of ski slopes that now allow them to be used. It is even possible to have your snowboard customized so it has the look and fit that you really want. This is common for those individuals that engage in snowboarding on a regular basis. The forecasting for snowboarding through 2015 indicates that by then snowboarding will be more popular than skiing.

One of the biggest problems with snowboarding is the risk of injuries. While wearing helmets are recommended very few people wear them while engaging in this sport. In order to encourage this some ski resorts won’t allow you to snowboard without a helmet. Some of the top names in the sport have also volunteered their time to promote the use of helmets in posters, magazines, and commercials.

Even though snowboarding is a thrilling winter sport to enjoy, you need to make sure you keep safety in your thoughts as well. Never snowboard in unauthorized areas and without the right skills to do it safely. Make sure you use quality equipment that fits you securely so that you minimize injuries to your body.

Skiing and Snowboarding - The Differences

Posted under Snowboarding by ady calow on September 1, 2008 8:31 pm

Skiing and snowboarding to the none winter sports fan are almost one in the same but to the slope lover you might as well as well say people who keep dogs are like people who keep cats!

A skier will tell you that skiing is the true snow sport and snowboarding is for kids while a snowboard rider will tell you skiing and snowboarding are totally different and don’t compare for fun, style and most importantly as far as they are concerned, for coolness.

In truth there are some pretty major differences between skiing and snowboarding. Snowboarding requires far less gear for starters and you don’t have ski sticks so your hands don’t get so cold.

Another major difference between skiing and snowboarding is the fashion. Skiiers tend to be made up of the baby boomer generation where as snowboarding is the choice of the younger snow fans.

Because of this, ski gear tends to be on the conservative side and snowboard gear is full of bright colors and fashion labels.

If you have never tried either your best bet is to go to your nearest slopes and take a few lessons in skiing and snowboarding to see which best suits you.

Snowboarding - A Brief History

Posted under Snowboarding by ady calow on August 31, 2008 11:25 am

Snowboarding is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in America as the younger generation see it as the cool option to skiing.

Snowboarding was invented here in the States back in the 1960’s and although it wasn’t until later that it became popular. It was declared a sport and a gold was competed for at the 1998 winter Olympics after some hard promoting by the International Snowboard Association which was formed only 4 yeare earlier in 94.

Styles competed for are the free ride, freestyle and free carve but although there are 3 styles, they do overlap.

Unfortunately snowboarding is no less dangerous than its relation skiing so you need to price in all the safety gear when looking for your first board. By the time you have purchased padded snowboard pants, wrist bands, goggles, snowboard bindings and a decent jacket you will have easily add a few hundred bucks to the bill.

Over 20% of visitors to the slopes in America are snowboarders and there are now around 4 million people snowboarding worldwide. Since its early days in Vermont snowboarding has come a long way and you will now find snowboarding facilities in every major ski resort in both America and Europe.
